Dr. Shell Xue
Senior Vice President and Managing Director of Regional Programs
On September 1, 2006, Dr. Shell Xue joined Smile Train as Chief Project Officer for China. She has used her coaching, resources development, and leadership skills to grow Smile Train’s partner hospitals from 143 to 397 in China. Smile Train’s cleft repair surgeries in China now average 30,000 children annually, 120 per working day, and a total of over 220,000 free cleft lip and or palate reconstructive surgeries have been provided in China over the past 11 years.
Shell has found great satisfaction in pursuing a career in the “not for profit” field. Even though she spent 11 years in receiving her M.D. and a Master's Degree of Clinical Pharmacology from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Medical School in China, postdoctoral training from Eastern Virginia Medical School, and healthcare leadership training from Yale University's School of Medicine in USA, she has never regretted her decision to discontinue her personal medical practice to work for charities providing continuous medical education and treatment. She remains inspired in her work with volunteers and other medical professionals who donate their time and talents to help children born with a cleft.
Prior to being headhunted by Smile Train, she had accumulated rich experience in working in various professional management positions in multi-national healthcare corporations in the United States, United Kingdom and most recently, the China National Program Director of Project HOPE, a leading international non-profit organization for worldwide medical services and education, for over 8 years.
Shell serves as a member of Smile Train’s Medical Education Committee, the China Medical Doctors Association since 2003, and a member of the Executive Committee of Evidence-Based Medicine of the China Medical Doctors Association since 2004.
